Grade 4-7-- Culca longs to dive like her brother Tulone, but girls on her native island take care of the men. The divers are essential to the survival of the village as the pearls and shells they gather are used for trading. All is not well, however, as Spanish conquistadors want only gold from the New World. When ships full of it sink in a storm, the divers are taken to recover the treasure, and Culca uses her nimble wits and unflagging bravery to save her brother's life. Female roles and Spanish colonial exploitation of land and people are the themes of this brief account. The dual role of the church is shown through the contrast of a humble, sincere friar and the ostentatious church of the bishop. Character development is limited and flat except for Culca and the friar. When she takes on the powerful church and government of Colonial Spain, realism slides away. However, the simple plot and dialogue will hold readers' interest. Chief recommendations for the book are a simple vocabulary and sentence structure, single plot line, and nondidactic tone. Culca comes through as a strong female voice; issues are presented but are not belabored. Useful for younger or less capable readers, this might provide an opening for discussion of the Spanish in the New World. Strasser notes that history records the first use of diving bells by 16th-century Caribbeans trying to salvage treasure from sunken Spanish ships; in this novel, unfortunately, he stretches credulity in suggesting how. On an island paradise off the Yucatan Peninsula, young Culca stubbornly insists that she wants to be a pearl diver like her brother Tulone, though diving is traditionally men's work. She falls in with a friar who teaches her Spanish, religion, and mathematics, then finds Leonardo's sketch of a diving bell in one of his books. On a visit to the mainland, Culca sees a big bell outside the cathedral. After Tulone and others are kidnapped by the Spanish to recover gold from a galleon sunk in deep water, she persuades the bishop and governor to try her Leonardo- inspired idea of using the bell to save her brother. The author plays up both Culca's independence and Spanish treachery; though a kind sailor helps Culca and her brother escape, the conquerors are seen mostly as relentlessly greedy and cruel--even the friar dies from their abuse. In the end, Culca gets her wish, since her village has been decimated and needs divers: a wan triumph. I read this book in school it is the best book I ever read !

HI, to all the people that have not read this book it is the time to do it!I read a chapter, and then put it down, then I had to pick it back up and read it! I think that Todd should make another book about the main character, Culca. He should make it about her life and about things that happen to her as she goes on with her life. I would go out and get it the day it came out. People may think it is a kids book but,I think anyone could read it if they wanted to read it.I am 10 yr. I love big 300 page books like that for adults. But this book is for anyone to read. I think Culca was so brave for what she did and how far she went to get her brother.I love all the Todd Strasser books! I love the book Help I'm Trapped In My Camp Counselors Body. It is in way two diff. worlds from the book The Diving Bell. I also can't get over how she said she would dive instead of her brother. How when she was climbing up the rope it's like I felt her pain too!So I would get the book the day it came out if he made another one ! Well hope I encouraged you to read this book!

The Diving Bell

The Diving Bell is an interesting and exciting book written by Todd Strasser. It takes place in a mexican village in the 1500's. It is about a brave and determined young girl named Culca, and her brother Tulone - a courageous young diver. He dives down and gets oysters to get pearls to sell for his family.

It all begins when the Spaniards come and kidnapp all the young men in the village and take them to a ship wreck to dive for treasure. Culca is determined to save her brother and his friends, and she would risk her life to do it. Will she accomplish it? Will she save her people? Read the diving Bell and you will find out!

I've read this book so many times that the cover is falling off. It is adventurous and daring. So if you are a person who likes suspensful stories, read The Diving Bell!

Interesting history!!

This is a great book to help children get interested in history. I usually find history boring, but it was fun to read about characters my own age and how their lives were! Culca is young girl who goes on many adventures around the world! I would recommend his book to anyone who likes to read about exciting adventures!

just waiting for something bad to happen

Covet Me is the second installment to Belle and Smith's story. If you have not read Crave Me, hurry and get on it and do not read any more of this review. Covet Me begins where Crave Me left off, that major cliffy that we were shocked with. Smith was married! If he has a relationship with Belle, how can he keep this a secret from her? Smith has deep dark secrets, they are very dangerous ones. What happens now that Belle is caught up in Smith's web of deceit and lies? Is Belle in danger? Covet Me is one of those books where you have your hand on your chest the entire time, just waiting for something bad to happen. The angst will keep you on your toes, flipping page after page to find out what happens next. Smith is a mystery, but he's so charming, how can Belle ever steer clear of a man like him?

She's a no non-sense kind of girl and will do anything for those she loves. Geneva Lee has brought us two characters we can't help but love and root for on this crazy journey of theirs. I just hope Smith and Belle can somehow get their happily ever after one day. Don't expect any fluff, Covet Me is full of danger and it's ohhhh so delicious! I may or may not have sent some nasty messages to the author at the end for her evil ways of stringing us along on this wild journey full of hope, love and danger. Hold on tight, this will be a very bumpy ride. Capture Me releases in December and I'm already counting the days until it's in my greedy little hands.

5 Brilliant, Royal stars for this sexy and suspenseful tale.

Sex. Scandal. Betrayal. Lies. Revenge. These all make up this delectable book, Covet Me.

Belle and Smith are sneaking around in order to keep Belle safe from Hammond, but they can't stay away from each other. Their lust and love consume them, leaving them craving each other's touch, presence, next breath. But what happens when their plot to hide from Hammond fails? What happens when the other puppet masters are pulling strings and demanding their separation. How will they cope?

Belle is fully immersed in bringing Bless to fruition with the help of her friend. Her biggest dreams are just within reach. Smith is so close from his freedom from Hammond he can almost taste it. But will he?

The writing is magnificent; seducing you from page one and leaving you breathless. The pages are filled with adrenaline evoking suspense that will have you holding on tight for this emotional roller coaster ride and never wanting to get off. The ending left so many loose ends that I will be eagerly awaiting December just to get another taste of this author's brilliance.

OMG you have outdone yourself Geneva Lee with this book! Let me say I started off disliking Smith at the start of this book. By the end you will fall back in love with him. It does have some major twist! This book far exceeded my expectations. I own everyone of her books. This is one seems to be the very best!

Now Why do I have to wait 2 months for the next book?

A useful (and funny) guide to academic writing

I'm a huge fan of Silvia's "How to Write a Lot." After buying that book about two years ago, I have set a daily writing schedule and stuck to it, and since doing so I have published several journal articles and gotten a federal grant. Silvia's new volume is incredibly useful, whether you are writing your first journal article or your fiftieth. It breaks down the process of writing journal articles into manageable bites (what are the three main formulas for an Introduction? When do you pick a target journal for your paper? What's the best strategy when you're asked to revise and resubmit a paper?), and it helped shake me out of some of the bad habits I'd developed. My writing was feeling stagnant, and this book gave me some needed perspective on how to communicate my ideas more effectively and efficiently. As a nice bonus, it's also really funny. Highly recommend.

Live-saver for a non-writer

As someone with a background in Math, writing is not my strong suit. But I had a thesis to write for my Ed Psych Master's and I struggled with how to make it organized but not formulaic. When this book was recommended to me, that all changed. The book is well-written and interesting, as well as easy to read. Each chapter walked you through how to approach writing or writing related tasks while keeping everything flexible enough that you don't feel like you're just following instructions in your writing.

Christine Filipak is a graphic designer by trade and spends most of her time doing the layout and designs for all of the Monolith Graphics products. For 8 years she worked as art director for Dark Realms Magazine. A regular feature in each issue of the magazine showcased artwork by Christine in conjunction with a fortune-telling article by "Madame Endora," the popularity of which prompted the design of this deck of fortune-telling cards.

Visually Stunning Oracle Deck

This is a visually stunning Oracle deck created by Christine Filipak and Joseph Vargo of Monolith Graphics. The dramatic artwork is done in a beautifully detailed Art Nouveau style, and combines Egyptian, Greek and Celtic mythologies with Norse, Alchemical, Astrological, and Pagan symbolism. Each card contains a key phrase giving a hint to the meaning, and are easily read upright or reversed. The 48 cards are divided into 5 different categories:

I. The Royal Court - these cards represent powerful influences in the life of the querent, or person asking the question. Here we find The King, The Queen, The Wizard, The Seer, The Knight, The Maiden, The Minstrel and The Harlequin.

2. The Realm of Fable - these cards represent the outside forces that guide and influence the querent. In this category, we have The Golem, The Greenman, Hindrance, Medusa, The Satyr, Seduction, Serendipity, The Siren, The Sphinx, and The Spirit.

3. The Bestiary houses creatures both real and imagined. In this section you will find The Black Cat, The Chimera, The Dragon, The Gryphon, The Raven, The Serpent, The Spider, The Unicorn, The Wolf, and The Wyvern.

4. The Treasury contains the tools that will assist the querent in attaining their goals. In this section is The Caduceus, The Chalice, The Dagger, The Gate, The Hand of Fate, The Hourglass, The Key, Love, The Mystic Circle, The Oracle, The Shield, and The Talisman.

5. The fifth category is entitled The Elements, and are responsible for exerting specific energies on the reading. This group is comprised of The Sun, The Moon, The Stars, Air, Earth, Fire, Water, and The Winds of Change.

The LWB (Little White Book) was very informative, but short. We would have like to read more in depth about each card. Many of the card titles, however, are self explanatory. For example, The Spider represents patience, while The Raven is a harbinger of doom. The Gate tells you that there is an obstacle in your path, while The Hourglass reminds you that time is of the essence. There are 4 Oracle spreads included in the LWB, but in truth, any of the traditional Tarot spreads would work as well. Although not a Tarot deck, Tarot readers will find much that is familiar. The Magician becomes the Wizard, the High Priestess is found as The Seer, and The Chimera is very reminiscent of the 7 of Cups. The Sun and Moon are also similar in meaning to those found in Tarot.

The cards are slightly oversized, but shuffle easily, and appear to be made of relatively sturdy card stock. We would have preferred a slicker finish, however, to ensure their longevity.

As a general rule, we have not used Oracle type decks in past readings, but considering the striking quality of this beautiful deck it will be hard to resist working with it on a regular basis.

Easy to learn, beautifully illustrated!

I finally ordered this set of cards through Amazon and was not disappointed. This is NOT tarot, but work much the same way. It is a great way to introduce fortune telling into your life. The art is very nice. The images are easy to memorize, this is not really required, the cards speak for themselves.(literally, the meanings are written on the cards)

I really admire the deck's artistry, especially the backs. It is as if the cards came from some time forgotten cabinet of curiousities. The feel is geared toward gothic style interpretation without totally leaning on the dark side. The deck's big brother Gothic Tarot is much more serious, as this deals with the classical archetypes directly. Madame Endora could almost be consided a new ager. There is nothing wrong with this at all!

This deck could be easily used by children at a sleep overs and not cause too many nightmares. It is a great place to begin for the amature to turn professional.

I've used these cards a few time now and like them very much. Madame Endora's Fortune Cards have a mystical feeling to them like Tarot but are much easier to read. The little book that comes with the deck gives a few layouts that work quite well and it is easy to come up with your own,too. No glory here

As a book, this falls woefully short of other Schama's other projects, such as the wonderful Power of Art. A televised documentary -- which was the first from for this work -- is fundamentally "of the moment," with immersive visuals to absorb the viewer. Turning that experience into language is in this instance largely a failure, yielding an avalanche of verbal stuff that is hard to follow, often boring, and ineffective. "Big" ideas are at best tentatively suggested; at the other extreme, most of the concrete details (say, descriptions of objects) are not engaging. I expected to encounter a marvelous history of a people with a compelling religion and culture, but, instead, came away with thinking that most of what had been conveyed was truly ordinary, often trivial. If there is grandeur or triumph in Jewish history, it does not exist in this flabby, unfocused, tedious rendition of "stuff the Jews did." Surprisingly disappointing, this book reads like an uninspired group project dignified by a famous writer's name.

What I most like about Schama’s book was the emphasis on the tangible

What I most like about Schama’s book was the emphasis on the tangible. He concentrates on archeological discoveries, surviving papyrus letters and fragments, the ruins of ancient synagogue, their styles, locations and decorations, in other words, things that can be seen, felt, read. He does not start the history with Abraham, Moses and similar mythic characters for whom there is no real evidence. Since he deals mainly with the tangible, the history does not start as early as one might have thought, but starts early enough, at around 1000 B.C.E., and follows the Jews through Hellenistic, Roman, and Medieval Ages up until nearly the 16th century.

One question that always comes to mind when reading Jewish history is how did this particular group survive when just about all other cotemporaneous religions and ethnicities disappear ages ago. Schama stresses the great advantage literacy gave the Jews for enduring cohesively through two Temple destruction, numerous exiles, attempted annihilations, forced conversions, and other scourges. Literacy seems always to have been encouraged. After all, even Yahweh himself was depicted as literate, inscribing the Ten Commandants himself and tagging Belshazzar’s wall. What other early gods sent missives to their people? I don’t recall off the top of my head Astarte, Baal, Zoroaster, Zeus depicted as reading and writing; usually their intentions were interpreted by oracles, omens and the like. But the laws of the Jews (unlike, say, the Moabites) were transcribed early on and apparently could be read a wide range of the populace. As early as the eighth century B.C.E., even heavy laborers carving a water conduit left inscriptions strongly suggesting they were literate. And from twenty-five centuries ago survive the letters of a Jewish mercenary at a faraway post to his family back home. The book has many more such examples.

Simon Schama is a noted British lecturer and TV documentarian. He has a pleasant, conversational manner of speech, and he attempts to infuse this manner into his writing. So his sentences often have asides, phrases and comments through the use of commas, parentheses, dashes, quotation marks and italics. The result is that, for a history, his style seems chatty. This chattiness might be off-putting to some, but I found it pleasant, like a friend telling a story.

A great read, maybe not what you expect?

This book is really well written and very easy to follow. It just wasn't what I thought it would be; it's more of a history of Jewish-ness - like, what does it mean to be Jewish at different places and times in antiquity - sometimes told out of sequence, than it is a history of "the Jews" as a social, political and geographic tale. As someone who is not Jewish I felt like I was missing a lot of references and meaning in the discourse about what it means to practice Judaism. Not a criticism of the book or of Schama at all, it just wasn't 100% for me and that's okay.

I nice workbook volume.

This is a nice volume. I'm currently working through it. I think Linn's idea is really enriching -- work through a lot of "junk" to feel better and focus on wholeness and balance. I think some of her activities for the "very committed" are SUPER ambitious, even if you don't have a job or family to attend to. I wish I had focused on this one per day for 28 days, but it's turning into a 3-month process with a toddler, husband, home, pets, and demanding job. She does mention you can self-pace, however. Overall I'm finding it very helpful.
