Amazon.com Review
This single audiocassette version of yet another bestseller about caring for the soul is the Zeitgeist in a nutshell. The author's softly spoken message, aimed at people who feel that their lives have become overwhelmed by trivial demands and the shadow of stress, is a series of practical, homely tips on how to regain both perspective and control. The key is to remember--or rather, to learn to bear in mind--some simple truths that we already know. As Carlson observes, "when you die, your in-box won't be empty," so you should stress less about emptying it now. And a century from now we'll all be dead and gone--so things that seem blisteringly urgent now are really trivial, and will soon be forgotten. Carlson is particularly good on the importance of controlling self-pity, especially the sense that we are the ones doing all the hard work, which can be so damaging to our relationships with others.
Two kinds of people might be disappointed by this tape. Those who have already thought deeply about these issues are likely to be underwhelmed by advice such as "change what can be changed, and learn to accept what can't be changed." And those who expect a single cassette to transform their lives will find, not surprisingly, that Carlson is much better at saying what we should do than at explaining how we can do it. But he reads well, and for overtaxed people who don't expect a miracle cure, the message on this tape could be a small first step to a saner life. (Running time: 90 minutes, one cassette) --Richard Farr
From Library Journal
Stress consultant Carlson reads his self-help guide with conviction, his gentle voice clear and persuasive. He presents common-sense advice for living a less hectic and more meaningful, loving life. His essential message is that we get caught up in minutiae, "the small stuff," and never get around to doing what makes us or our loved ones happy. He advises readers to engage in such small acts as paying someone a compliment daily, putting a lid on keeping track of who does what around the house, and writing a letter to a friend. Carlson urges small daily changes and uses examples of improvement from his own life to show how the advice works, making the book ideally suited to the audio format. Tape quality is excellent. Recommended for public libraries.?Nancy R. Ives, SUNY at Geneseo

I absolutely love and cherish this book
By Petehog
I absolutely love and cherish this book. This book has changed my life. By nature, I'm not an easy-going person. I'm very driven and ambitious and by nature, it's been a blessing and a curse as it's helped me in areas of my life but failed me in relationships and friendships. This book was a life-changer. Granted, I've read other books which talk about the same principles in this book, ie. The Bible, "How To Win Friends and Influence People". But this book is different. There are a few books which have dynamically changed my life. Namely, "Think and Grow Rich", "Rich Dad, Poor Dad", "The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People" and I would list this book among them. It's the one book which contrasts with everything I've been programmed to know about life. Namely, this book teaches you to chill out. I find that after I've read this book, I am more understanding of things and I don't pout as much as I used to. I won't say that this book made me a better person but I can fairly say that this book opens your eyes and makes you realize when you are not being easy-going. This book does that. This book talks about basic things about handling stress and calming down but in a way which isn't preachy and in a way that's so simple to understand. The writing style and the way the chapters are laid out are done in a way where it's very easy to learn, very easy to absorb, very easy to practice...and most importantly...done in a way which permanently changes your outlook on life. I'm not saying this book will immediately make you easy-going and friendly but it helps by a large margin. I'd highly recommend this book.

Everyone should read this book at least once
By Kat
Each chapter in this book spans 1-2 small pages, with like, size 12 font. It gives you glimpses into how Richard Carlson viewed and approached interactions in his family and work using compassion, patience, and self-love.
He draws your attention to common life scenarios and suggests a perspective that often differs from the instinctual response of the moment. At times you'll reflect to yourself how "obvious" some idea or another is, but rather than write the entire book off I suggest you appreciate your awareness of that perspective, and then continue reading.
This book is not an elaborate manual for how to live your life. If anything, it's a reminder: we get so caught up in our lives, our jobs, or habits that we go on auto-pilot and forget to bring ourselves back to the present moment. Carlson is saying, don't forget to examine your responses, to consider whether they are in line with a peaceful way of thinking, and to realize, if they aren't, that you can change them.

Great book. Lots of Good Advice!
By Michael
I have four stars because it does have a ton of great techniques to overcome stress, but some of the techniques were very closely related. Seemed several of the chapters could have been under one heading, not two. Besides being a little repetitive his writing style is exceptional, very down to earth and detailed with specific examples for each technique. It was an easy, although long read. Seems like it was written as a daily or weekly journal of ideas. You can skip around to any short chapter 2-3 pages for most and get a great nugget of wisdom. If that is what you are looking for, this book does that very well! Richard is obviously very knowledgeable about the subject and shares his ideas with no ego or scientific rhetoric. Good read.
