SUPERB TextBook for Plant Biology and Biochem

VERY IMPRESSIVE !!! I have had the pleasure of owning many excellent textbooks in my time - but this book takes the cake. I don't even know how the author could have devoted so much time to this. Many excellent chapters, the quality of illustrations and diagrams was SUPERB ... the whole text was thoroughly readable. Plants and Biochem are not my specialty areas, and I expected a tough slog when I started to dig into the material. But this book is well written, and very readable for anyone with a good science background. Other Reviewers have already said it, but I will repeat the advice. This book is the BIBLE for plant biochemistry. Worth every penny that you will pay. Good luck, and special thanks to all of the authors who made such a great textbook!!

Again, Toby Neighbors does not disappoint. This second book in the Third Prince Series is a combination of mystery, action, and adventure. It keeps the reader on his/her toes. I look forward to seeing what new adventures he will have to offer in the future.

This, like the first installment was a nice read.For me it was a bit of a disappointment.Like the first installment it went from one fight scene to the next with out the story building that I find interesting. Elkain and sidekicks are put in one battle after another without any plot development.Is he the true King?Does he want to be King? Elkain bounces from one to the other thru-out the story-line.This does nothing for me as a reader.It was the same in book one.I do like the differing religions Mr. Neighbors has composed in this series, it helps the story,as does the monks he lived his early life with. The sidekicks are outstanding and for me the heart of the story.If some of the fight scenes had been edited out and more intrigue added this is easily a five star book. I like to read about a truly EVIL villian and Mr.Neighbors never really brought forth one to despise.Yes, the villain wants to be King and will stop at nothing to get the throne, he betrays and back stabs at every turn but he never is fleshed out.I find Tooles to be one of the most interesting characters in the story and he has just a bit part.As with the first book nothing wrong with this story it's better then most. I was wanting more about the characters(sidekicks),a little better romance and a lot less fighting.The sword angle is very interesting and has been told well up to this point.Now is the time to give us the history behind it.Saying that it must be enchanted is NOT ENOUGH.I liked it but I should have loved it.

Royal Destiny continues the tale begun with Third Prince. New characters are introduced and many more battles are fought before the story is finished. Other than Prince Elkain, few of the characters are detailed enough to tell you much beyond which fantasy archetype they fill. I would love to have learned more about the magely councilor Tooles, Fairan's rise through the ranks to general, and the sword's back story. But, alas, it seemed most of my time was spent reading detailed accounts of the various battles - exciting though they may have been, their repetition became tedious. Fortunately, becoming king involves far more than just fighting and presenting oneself to the Council and people. There are plots, betrayals, and deadly magics to fill the pages between battles. Overall, the story is interesting enough to make the time spent reading it worthwhile. Most of the ends are tied up well enough to avoid the disappointment of finishing the book, but very obvious openings are left for yet another sequel.

If you don't mind the sort of grammatical horror common in high school English papers, you'll enjoy both Third Prince and Royal Destiny immensely. A potentially epic tale like this really deserves the extra polishing of a good proofreader; Spellcheck simply cannot replace a skilled editor with a knowledge of homophones.

James Strong (1822–94), LL.D., S.T.D., graduated from Wesleyan University and served as professor of biblical literature at Troy University and later as professor of exegetical theology at Drew Theological Seminary. Dr. Strong was the author of numerous works, including his famous Exhaustive Concordance of the Bible.

Older But Still Relevant From a Sure Source

James Strong is well-known for his 'Strong's Concordance' but not so well-known for this highly interesting book. It is an essential, introductory read for anyone who studies the 'tent of meeting' and 'tabernacle of testimony' (Strong rightly points out that the term 'tabernacle of meeting' and 'tabernacle of the congregation' is incorrect), be they part-time bible student or serious researcher. He steps the reader through the meaning of words by describing the components of the structure from the outside inward; the opposite to the way it is described in the book of Exodus. The book is packed with many interesting facts and his views on the possible symbolism of the structure is fascinating. Its deficiency is a lack of figures to thoroughly make the points but the figures he has are sufficient to navigate the more difficult concepts. It is recommended for those who want a serious read on the subject but easy enough to understand for those with a moderate to strong understanding of the Old Testament.

Improved 2nd edition

Ordered by my wife. She says this edition is better because of the interviews with decision-makers and active filmmakers. She found the checklists useful, but at first reading, thought the information was buried too deep in concerns that did not apply to her. Rossi is a very successful story consultant and possibly tailored her book to serve all the different types of filmmakers she's worked with.

I was fortunate enough to also spend a weekend at one of Fernanda's workshops and the book is a great compliment. If you aren't as lucky I definitely suggest studying this book cover to cover. The information inside is invaluable!

Essential primer for documentary filmmakers

Fernanda Rossi is famous for her seminars on trailer mechanics. Whether you've attended them or not, this book is essential reading for anyone trying to raise money or earn grants to support the production of their documentary film. A good fundraising trailer (not to be confused with movie trailers used to promote films, they are different beasts) is an essential component of your fundraising campaign and/or grant applications. Ms. Rossi will show you the nuts and bolts of putting your trainer together, with a practical approach delivered with the sensibility of a master "mechanic" and skilled storyteller. You will learn how to think about and structure your trailer for maximum effectiveness. The second edition is a vast improvement over the first edition, which I read many years ago. The second edition has more meat on the bones and reflect changes in the industry. The book is enhanced by several interviews with industry funders and pros, providing additional insights into the process. If you already have a trailer, you might want to recut it after reading the book. If you've not stated editing your trailer yet, read this book and get cracking!

Close to the truth

This is an interesting book. As an Airline pilot who was scheduled to fly SFO-JFK on the morning of 911 I have been critical of the "official story" from the very beginning. The stand down of NORAD and virtually everything that happened with ATC that day was without precedent and totally out of protocol. None of it made sense let alone the supposed "hijackers" navagating and flying aircraft with sophisticated "glass cockpits" I just don't buy it.
For a non-avaition type the author, I believe, gets really close to the truth. He leaves a lot of loose ends but overall his premise is probably very close to what actually happened. The layman may think that such a story is implausible but the set up of confusion, decoy aircraft, merging radar targets, and "live hijack exercises" provided the near perfect cover for such an operation as well as the plane strikes providing the cover for the controlled demolition of the towers except of course for Bldg.#7 which went virtually unnoticed by the masses.
You need to be able to think critically and outside of the box which the Corporate Mainstream Media constructs. Be assured, the perpetrators count on you not thinking and staying inside the mental box they construct for you.
My hope is that some day soon we will have the truth about 911 and its implications.

TO GET TO THE TRUTH

I have Commercial and Airline Transport Pilot Ratings.
I knew immediately after 9/11 that it was a faked 'attack' because NO military jets were scrambled for almost an hour and a half after the hijackings started.
There had NEVER BEFORE IN HISTORY been 4 simultaneous hijackings of airliners!!
And the government wants us to believe that the Pentagon essentially did nothing for 1 1/2 hours...
This is literally impossible since normal (and basically automatic) procedure sees Air Force planes scrambled within minutes of even a small private aircraft going off of its flight plan (assuming radio contact cannot be made).
I also found the idea of the poorly trained - too put it mildly -"hijackers" (w/NO actual experience flying Boeings) performing the maneuvers that took place on 9/11 ridiculous. Many airline pilots have said the same thing.
Also, see RennMax's comment above: "The layman may think that such a story is implausible but the set up of confusion, decoy aircraft, merging radar targets, and "live hijack exercises" provided the near perfect cover for such an operation..."
In fact the Pentagon and Intelligence Agencies have done this before; one example is the Korean Air Flight 007 (747) shotdown by the Soviets in September, 1983 -- another case where the Pentagon used 'a set up of confusion, decoy aircraft, merging radar targets," etc. to trick the Soviets.
And, you might want to ponder the following -- most people are not aware of 2 crucial public statements re. 9/11 (reported briefly in the mainstream media and then never, of course, mentioned again):

A unique and groundbreaking work

In the analysis of black ops, such as the JFK assassination, there are basically two paths to follow. One, is to investigate the technique of how it was done, the mechanics of the operation. This has been done ad nauseum of course with the JFK bullets, the film, the autopsy photos, etc.
The second path is to zoom back and look at the big picture - the geopolitical, financial and intelligence matrix from which such operations emerge. Personally, I find the second path to be more valuable over the long run in most cases. The HOW doesn't interest me nearly as much as the WHO.
Regarding 9/11, there have been many excellent books written providing a detailed analysis of the big picture, Webster Tarpley and Peter Dale Scott being two authors in particular. However, to my knowledge there has not yet been an in depth book dealing with the entire scenario involving the 4 planes and their role in the production.
Although the big picture usually answers more of the really important questions, this book on the HOW may be the exception to that rule. Because since we can logically assume that Muslim terrorists were not in control of major airports nor the FAA on 9/11, then if we find evidence of deception and criminal activity within the airport and security staff, or the FAA, then we have verifiable evidence of domestic involvement.
Forget the towers, the hocus pocus that Hartwell describes around the planes could crack this affair wide open.
He doesn't provide all the answers, but his analysis is spot on. He asks the right questions that no one else seems to be asking. Highly recommended.

Not so good

This is not something I need in a book: Too much information and not all of them are needed. What is the user guide of synthesis tool, place and route tool for? If I need them, I will look for those tools' documents, not this book.
Also, where is ASIC? Nearly half of the book is user guide and FPGA project. Remain are some recall theories and RTL coding guideline.

More than that, although the theories and RTL guideline are good (more then good, actually) but the testbench is disappointed. We cannot control inputs and review outputs manually, there must be some way to check output and only report result if the model does not behave like what expected.

In conclusion, if we need concept of design and RTL code, then we can use the first half of the book; if we need FPGA projects, then some last chapters can help us; if we need some thing about ASIC example, forget it.

Detailed transformations of algorithms for optimal desighns

This is an excellent book, written by one of the authorities in the field. It offers detailed design techniques that will help the system designer explore the 3-dimension design space and achieve optimizations in all or either of: area, time, energy consumption. The use of specific examples illustrates the techniques, while complicated backround information is well-organized in the Appendices. I used the book as a recommended text book in my 1-semester "VLSI Signal Processing" graduate-level class and the students really loved it. It covers all availble techniques, from the simplest to the most advanced ones, with full explanation of the theory, with complete and detailed implementation steps for a wide range of signal processing algorithms.Since the book does not deal with the design at the physical level, but with transformations of the processing algorithms so that their VLSI implementations will satisfy certain criteria of optimality, it is not absolutely mandatory that the reader has already taken courses in VLSI design, although this could help appreciate the benefits offered by the techniques detailed in the book. The exercises found at the end of each chapter help the reader apply the learned techniques in all kinds of applications. I am convinced that the thoroughness and the high standards accomplished by the author in the writing of this book will help establish it as the leading text or reference book for several years to come.

Required Text for Digital Signal Processing Designers

If you're a communications system architect or designer, this is a required text for the efficient implementation of modern DSP algorithms.
Having the text for a few months, a group of us have already applied techniques offered in the text in VHDL.
The first chapters cover pipelining, parallel processing, retiming, folding and unfolding theory. These chapters are necessary to really understand DSP optimization concepts. I have not found another text where these concepts are discussed.
The text is positioned well between a pure analytic text, and a "cookbook." Some personal effort is required to code a technique, but this shouldn't be difficult for someone using MATLAB. Once modeled and simulated, the implementer should be able to translate the high level code into VHDL, Verilog, or a programmable DSP such as the TI TMS320 in "C."
Personally, I found Dr. Prahi's discussion of fixed point quantization by canonic signed digit format very useful.
An example problem is provided with each technique to enhance understanding.

Vignettes from the lives of people such as Mozart underline the fact that even geniuses work hard to realize the fruits of their labor. A personable tone is carried throughout the book, and within the text is a gold mine of advice. Tharp not only promotes tried-and-true habits, but also encourages readers to dig deep within themselves and come up with their own answers. Most sections conclude with exercises; they are fun and almost seamlessly bring home the author's main points. The black-and-white illustrations and photos are few in number. I love Tharp's intensity!

In these pages a philosophical tug of war will periodically rear its head. It is the perennial debate, born in the Romantic era, between the beliefs that all creative acts are born of (a) some transcendent, inexplicable Dionysian act of inspiration, a kiss from God on your brow that allows you to give the world The Magic Flute, or (b) hard work.

If it isn't obvious already, I come down on the side of hard work. That's why this book is call The Creative Habit. Creativity is a habit, and the best creativity is a result of good work habits. That's it in a nutshell."

It's helpful. In a nutshell, it tells the reader to make a habit out of the work it takes to be creative. It has exercises to help keep one's focus. But some of the exercises are more based on trying to answer existential questions about yourself. The author uses herself as a test subject for these exercises and she naturally comes back to her beginnings and the innate reasons for being as a resource to gather creative ideas. But I couldn't finish the book because the author kept talking about herself the entire time outside of said exercieses and then uses famous figures in history to support her choices in life. Despite her intentions, her need to validate her career choices show up whenever she talks about her unique name, her upbringing, her earlist memory, etc. I appreciate that her book's main message is that ingenuity, creativity, and talent all result from unglamourous, habitual, consistent, hard work. But that message is overrun by the author's introspection of herself.

Buy it, learn it, and use it - you won't regret it.

This book gave me the missing piece for my own creative practice. For many, many years I have struggled with the whole "how do I work as an artist" knowing there is more to it than just the art pieces I produce. It all seems so simple now but idea generation and keeping a daily practice has been elusive for me. I admit that I own the hard copy book but it is lost in the shuffle of my many bookcases. I have a very long (1-hour plus each way) commute and have an Audible.com subscription. When I saw the book available there I immediately added it to my audio book collection. The Kindle purchase is the result of not being able to locate the hardcover book and wanting to revisit the exercises. I recommend this book to anyone trying to be creative in a world that doesn't always appreciate. let alone make it easy, to be creative.
